 Takeaways (week 1-3)

Hello! This is my debut blog from my IPCD module:0

This blog will be a summary of the important stuff that i have learnt or found interesting about, hence I'm eager to share with you guys.

First 3 weeks of ICPD was a BLaST, hearing that we are able to 3D print was an absolute dream as I seen many amazing work on youtube about 3D printing.

Tutorials:>

-The classification of chemical designs (week 2)
There are four main types of designs,
  • Commodities ( made in large quantities)
  • Molecular products ( discovered through researches)
  • Micro-structured products (chemical organization in micro-scale)
  • Chemical devices ( products used daily for convenience) 
-Product design stages (week 3)
There are also four stages,
  • Needs ( starts from identifying customers demand)
  • Ideas ( establishing phase)
  • Selection ( refining the ideas generated)
  • Manufacture ( developing the project)
-The pain points in the chemical designs (week 3)

Pain points actually not physical but problems faced by consumers when using the product. This led me to recall of an incident when I purchased a watch. It was pricy, however after 2 days of use it stopped and a malfunction occurred. This made me very frustrated as I have paid for not just the brand of the product but also the quality. This is a very good explanation in my opinion. Hence this my team and I to predict some of the problems that users may face when using our product.
some of the common pain points are classified under;
  • interaction
  • purchasing
  • compatibility
  • functionality
This has led us to a small activity on our product design!
My teammates are Jing Hui, Jun kai, Yu Han and myself. On that day all of us had many interesting ideas, we had the same goal in mind, which was to make a product that helps with the sustainability part in the world. 

The most feasible ones was Jing Hui's idea on making meat from compressing beans. This was related to our idea of sustainability as there the hug amount of meat consumption has been affecting our environment very badly. This was mainly due to cattle ranching, hence if we were to switch it up and use more beans as alternative to real meat we are able to decrease the impact of climate change in the end.





literature review

Literature reviews is a major part of our chemical designing, as it allow us to have like a reality check and see if our design is feasible and relevant to our research.

This allow us to correct our path when we start with our design and guide us with other information the reviewers have already gotten.

This reference also open our eyes to many other perspectives so that we can explore new and other ways to design our product.

Tuckerman's Team Formation Model

This models was exposed to us and it contains 5 parts
Forming>Storming>Norming>Performing>Adjourning 

This model has helped my team on distributing of the roles as some of us are stronger at for example technical skill and others may be better at being a leader. Splitting our roles according to our strength to allow maximum efficiency will be important in synergizing with others in future. My team has Utilized this model to split our role according to our workstyle and this has allowed us to quickly progress in the first tutorial.



Practical 1Two enlightening things I learnt were 1(reverse engineering) and 2(Air lift pump)
1 Reverse engineering has allowed me to see the thought process of how the designer of the coffee machine has used many scientific methods to construct this machine. One of which was the implementation of check valve to mitigate the lost of steam and water backflow. We also saw how the designer making heating of the water more efficiently by increase surface area of the metal coil.



2 The Air lift pump has showed me the power of hydrostatic pressure. As the static lift increase, the static head decrease meaning more liquid will be above. As liquid is heavier than water flowrate of water will drastically increase as static head decreases. Hence from this experiment, we figured out that the higher the submergence ratio (submergence length over total pipe length), the higher the flowrate.




In a nutshell, the first three weeks of ICPD has been a blast and I have already been exposed to many awesome theories that I relate to my life.

BLOG Entry 2

Week 4 Hello guys welcome back to my blog and today I have another post for you guys. I will be sharing about the lessons i have just learnt in week 4.👀 Update My team has decided to continue our project on sustainability in the environment. We came up with using beans and vegetation as a fake meat through the help of a machine. This little machinery aids out idea in making🌟sustainable meat🌟. There are actually numerous benefits to this and the first is that fake meat converted from beans and other vegetation are more nutritious and altogether a healthier meat substitute. Second reason why my team has settled with this idea because it decreases Global Warming in general!  Fun fact: cattle ranching ( taking care of animals ) is a major contribution to global warming due to significant amount of methane and nitrous oxide (powerful greenhouse gases).
